School History

Somerville Primary School has been an integral part of the local community for many years. There have been many generations walk through our gates, and each one has contributed to the rich history and strong sense of belonging that defines our school. We are proud of our traditions, our community spirit, and the lasting connections formed here. Somerville Primary continues to be a place where students feel valued, supported, and inspired to learn, ensuring that future generations will carry our story forward.

1885 to
2012

Somerville Primary School began in 1885 with 63 students. There were two different sites until 1914, one being the original schoolhouse as depicted in the original logo. Throughout these early years, the school supported local children whose families often worked on the surrounding farms and orchards, with the wider community playing an important role in school life. The school motto at the time, Striving Ahead, reflected the determination and resilience of both students and the community.

2013 to
2025

Stepping confidently into the 2010’s Somerville Primary School embraced a culture of being ‘Proud to Shine’. Not only in academic excellence, but in the way we treat and support one another. Guided by our mission ‘Inspiring excellence in education… every student, every time’ we have combined our strong community spirit with high quality teaching and learning. As our school continues to grow and evolve, it is important that our identity reflects our proud history and our vision for the future.

2025 and Beyond

Our new logo marks the next chapter in Somerville Primary School’s story. Retaining the star as a nod to our history, the refreshed design also embraces the future of education. The star itself is layered with meaning, representing learning, innovation and our natural environment. Together, these elements reflect collaboration, growth, and the dynamic learning landscape that defines our school. Bold, clear text reinforces our identity and highlights the strong sense of community that underpins everything we do.
