Specialist Subjects

Specialist Subjects at Somerville Primary School provide students with opportunities to explore creativity, movement, communication and self-expression through Auslan, Physical Education, Performing Arts and Visual Arts. These programs help students build confidence, skills and a broader understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Auslan

At our school, the Auslan program is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum: Languages – Auslan. Learning Auslan supports students to develop communication skills, cultural understanding, and respect for diversity.

Through learning Auslan, students gain insight into Deaf culture and communities while building inclusive attitudes and an appreciation for different ways people communicate. Through the Auslan program, students develop communication skills, empathy, and cultural awareness, supporting an inclusive school environment where diversity is valued and respected.

In Prep to Year 2, Auslan learning focuses on developing basic communication skills through fun, interactive, and play-based activities. Students learn simple signs related to everyday topics such as greetings, feelings, family, colours, numbers, and classroom routines. Lessons emphasise visual communication skills, including facial expression, body language, and turn-taking. Students are encouraged to use Auslan to communicate simple messages and to understand that people communicate in different ways.

In Years 3 to 6, Auslan learning builds on foundational skills and expands students’ ability to communicate more confidently and accurately. Students learn a wider range of vocabulary and sentence structures and begin to create short signed texts, such as descriptions, stories, and conversations. They also develop an understanding of Deaf culture, identity, and the role of Auslan in the Australian community. Students practise receptive and expressive signing skills, improve fluency, and learn how language and culture are closely connected.

Physical
Education

At our school, the Physical Education program is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education. The curriculum supports students to develop movement skills, teamwork, confidence, and an understanding of how physical activity contributes to a healthy and active lifestyle.

Learning is inclusive, engaging, and designed to meet the developmental needs of students at different stages. Through our Physical Education program, students develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to participate confidently in physical activity and maintain an active, healthy lifestyle now and into the future.

In Prep to Year 2, Physical Education focuses on developing fundamental movement skills through play-based and structured activities. Students participate in a variety of games and activities that build skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing, and kicking. Lessons also introduce basic rules, safety awareness, and cooperation with others.

In Years 3 to 6, Physical Education builds on fundamental skills and introduces more complex movement patterns, strategies, and teamwork. Students participate in a range of sports, games, fitness activities, and challenges that promote skill development, problem-solving, leadership, and fair play. Lessons encourage students to apply tactics, improve coordination, and take increasing responsibility for their learning and behaviour.

Performing
Arts

At our school, the Performing Arts program, including Music, Dance and Drama, is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum: The Arts. Through these disciplines, students explore creativity, self-expression, and collaboration while developing confidence and communication skills.

Learning in the Arts encourages imagination, cultural understanding, and an appreciation of performance and creative expression. Through the Performing Arts program, students develop creativity, collaboration, and communication skills, supporting their personal growth and enabling them to engage with the arts confidently and thoughtfully throughout their schooling.

In Prep to Year 2, students explore music, dance, and drama through play-based, imaginative, and sensory experiences. In Music, students experiment with sound, rhythm, and pitch using their voices, body percussion, and simple instruments. In Dance, they explore movement, space, and energy to express ideas and emotions. In Drama, students engage in role-play, storytelling, and improvisation to develop imagination and confidence. Students learn to respond to and share their ideas about performances, developing early skills in listening, observing, and cooperating with others.

In Years 3 to 6, students build on foundational skills and develop greater control, technique, and expressive intent in music, dance, and drama. In Music, students create, perform, and respond to music using instruments, voice, rhythm, melody, and notation. In Dance, they explore choreography by combining movement elements and performing sequences for different purposes. In Drama, students develop characters, scripts, and performances using voice, movement, and expressive skills. Students also explore how the arts reflect cultural, historical, and social contexts, including Australian and Indigenous perspectives.

Visual
Art

At our school, the Visual Arts program is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum: The Arts – Visual Arts. The curriculum encourages students to explore creativity, express ideas, and develop skills through a range of art forms and processes.

Students engage in making and responding to art, learning to communicate meaning while developing confidence, imagination, and an appreciation of the arts. Through the Visual Arts program, students develop creativity, critical thinking, and an appreciation for artistic expression, supporting them to engage with the arts confidently and thoughtfully throughout their schooling and beyond.

In Prep to Year 2, Visual Arts learning focuses on exploration and experimentation. Students are introduced to a variety of materials, tools, and techniques such as drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, and sculpture. Through guided activities and creative play, students explore colour, shape, texture, and line while expressing their ideas, observations, and experiences. Students also begin to talk about their own artwork and the artwork of others, learning simple art vocabulary and developing an awareness that artworks can tell stories and communicate ideas.

In Years 3 to 6, Visual Arts learning builds on foundational skills and introduces more intentional planning and refinement of ideas. Students explore a broader range of art forms, materials, and techniques, including digital and mixed media. They learn about the visual conventions used by artists and investigate how artworks reflect cultural, social, and historical contexts, including Australian and Indigenous perspectives. Students are encouraged to plan, create, and evaluate their artworks, developing personal style, technical skill, and the ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
