Sustainability

Our school has a strong focus on sustainability and is working towards five star accreditation through Resource Smart Victoria.

Sustainable practices are embedded into our daily operations and across the curriculum, allowing students to develop a deep understanding of environmental responsibility and the importance of caring for our planet.

Students from Years One to Year Six have the opportunity to elect a Somerville Environmental Education Crew (SEEC) leader for their class. These student leaders play an active role in promoting and modelling environmentally sustainable practices throughout the school, such as waste reduction, recycling, energy conservation, and caring for school grounds. The SEEC program encourages student voice, leadership, and collaboration while fostering a shared sense of responsibility for our environment.

Through this program, students develop a strong understanding and respect for the natural world and the impact of human actions. By engaging in hands-on learning experiences, inquiry projects, and whole-school initiatives, we aim to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to make informed and responsible choices. Our sustainability focus supports students to become active, environmentally conscious citizens who are committed to contributing positively to a sustainable future; both within our school community and beyond.
