Somerville
Fundraising Group

Somerville Fundraising Group is a dedicated group of volunteer parents and carers who work together to build strong connections between families, teachers, school staff, students, and the wider school community at Somerville Primary School.
The group supports the school in organising a range of events throughout the year that support and enrich school life. These include Mother’s Day and Father’s Day stalls, School Disco, Working Bees and support for major school events such as the Colour Fun Run. Funds raised through these activities are reinvested into the school to enhance resources, programs, and opportunities for students.
Somerville Fundraising Group is open to all parents and carers of Somerville Primary School students. Whether families are new to the school or long-standing members of the community, this group provides a welcoming way to meet other parents, form friendships, and connect with families from diverse backgrounds. Getting involved also offers valuable opportunities to support one another and engage more closely with school life.
Above all, Somerville fundraising group is an inclusive, friendly, and enjoyable group run by parents for parents. It values the diversity, skills, interests, and experiences that every family brings and aims to enhance the wellbeing of both students and parents by fostering a strong, connected school community.
If you would like to share your skills, ideas, or time, you are warmly invited to get involved in organising events or supporting activities. For more information or to join this wonderful group of volunteers, please contact the school office.

School
Council

The role of school council is outlined in the Education and Training Reform Act 2006. In. essence, the role of School Council is one of helping to set the long term future for the school and maintaining oversight (not management) of the school’s operation. The School Council is a legal entity composed of Department of Education employees and unpaid voluntary members elected by the school community. As the governing body, a school council can positively influence the quality of education provided to students in their school.

Functions of a School Council

The functions of a school council include:

  • Participating in the development, monitoring and endorsement of the School Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Plan.

  • Developing, reviewing or updating school policies as required by law or DET policy.
  • Raising funds for school-related purposes.
  • Maintaining the school’s grounds and buildings.
  • Providing the cleaning and sanitary services that are necessary for the school.
  • Ensuring that all money coming into the council is used for proper purposes relating to the school.

  • Creating interest in the school in the wider community.
  • Taking into account the views of the community.
  • Regulating and facilitating the after-hours use of school premises and grounds.
